Management workshop to teach timber marketing

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, in cooperation with the University of Illinois Extension, will host the Bi-State Timber Management Seminar on Tuesday (April 8) at the Beef House Restaurant near Covington.

The 6-9 p.m. program will teach woodland owners how to more effectively manage and market their timber.

"Timber is often a 'forgotten' resource on many farms, but good forest management can yield very good returns on land often unsuitable for annual crops," said Mark Spelbring, Purdue Extension educator. "Trees are crops too. They just have a longer life cycle."

Attendees will receive marketing strategy advice from university specialists and hear about real-world experiences from woodland owners.

The workshop will include the following sessions:

* Introduction to timber management - Ralph Johnson, Purdue Extension forester.

* Timber management/marketing plans - Dave Shiley, University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources educator.

* Practical experience growing and marketing timber - Woody Barton, Owen County woodland owner.

Registration is $20 and includes dinner and materials. The fee can be paid upon arrival.  The registration deadline is (Saturday) April 5.
