EVENTS

** -- March 17. 7 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Third annual "Own Your Future: A Woman's Guide to Success," featuring President France A. Córdova, Susan Bulkeley Butler and Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman Sponsored by Purdue Panhellenic Association and the Women's Resource Office. For information, contact wro@purdue.edu

-- April 5. 10:30 a.m. Purdue Armory. The 26th annual national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Students from around the country will create complex machines to accomplish a simple task. This year's task is to assemble a hamburger consisting of no less than one precooked meat patty, two vegetables and two condiments, sandwiched between two bun halves. The contest is sponsored by Phi Chapter of Theta Tau fraternity and is free and open to the public.

 

ENTERTAINMENT

-- March 26. 7:30 p.m. Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. BJM Danse. Presented by Purdue Convocations, the performance will feature a program combining classical ballet and Brazilian popular dance. Prior to the performance, a pre-show discussion featuring the BJM Danse artistic director will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 320. Tickets are $26 for adults and $19 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. -- March 27 to April 6. Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre, Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. "Marat/Sade." Presented by Purdue Theatre, the play was written by German playwright Peter Weiss in 1964 and has the full title of "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade." Recommended for adult audiences only due to adult content. Performances are offered at 7:30 p.m. March 27, 7:30 p.m. March 28, 7:30 p.m. March 29, 3 and 7:30 p.m. March 30, 7:30 p.m. April 4, 3 and 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 3 p.m. April 6. Tickets are $10.50 for adults and seniors and $8.50 for Purdue students. Tickets are available at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

-- April 10. 7:30 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Dierks Bentley with special guests Bucky Covington and Luke Bryan. The Throttle Wide Open Tour is presented by Purdue Convocations in cooperation with Bravo Entertainment. Tickets are $36.50 for the general public and $29.50 for Purdue and Ivy Tech students and children under age 19. ** -- April 25. Elliott Hall of Music. Comedians Stephen Lynch and Charlie Murphy performing "Last Blast: A Double Shot of Comedy." Sponsored by the Student Concert Committee. Language advisory. Tickets are $32 for the general public and $27 for Purdue and Ivy Tech students and children under age 19. Tickets go on sale for Purdue and Ivy Tech Lafayette students, and Purdue faculty and staff with a current ID at 10 a.m. March 20. Tickets for the general public go on sale at 10 a.m. March 21. EXHIBITS

-- March 17-21. Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries, Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. Industrial Design seniors from the Visual and Performing Arts Department will present an exhibition of their work. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

-- March 24-28. Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries, Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. Metonym, an exhibition of works by Anju Kulkarni. A brown bag lecture about the exhibition will take place at noon March 24, and a reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. March 27.

-- Through April 12. Shook Room of Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S. 10th St., Lafayette. An exhibition of hats worn by African-American women in Lafayette churches. Call (765) 494-3092.

-- Through April 20. "Autotelematic Spider Bots." Stewart Center Gallery. Made by artist Ken Rinaldo, an associate professor of art and technology at Ohio State University, the Spider Bots are five spider-like sculptures that interact with the public in real-time and self-modify their behaviors based on their interaction with the viewer, themselves and their environment. They will function for 15-minute periods at 10:30 a.m. and at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. daily. Sponsored by Purdue Galleries. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday, plus Thursday until 8 p.m., and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Call (765) 496-7899.

-- Through April 20. "Machinic Drift." Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union. Various interactive works and imagery by artist Ken Rinaldo, including robotic fish and electronic sound work sculptures. Sponsored by Purdue Galleries. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday, plus Thursday until 8 p.m., and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Call (765) 496-7899.

-- Through April 29. "Chronicling Women's History at Purdue: Selections from the Susan Bulkeley Butler Women's Archives." The exhibit will feature artifacts, documents and photographs highlighting the history of university women and coinciding with Women's History Month. The exhibit includes collections on the "Queen of American Agriculture," the "Mother of Modern Management," Amelia Earhart and more. In Stewart Center, Room 279. LECTURES

** -- March 29. 1 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Jane Goodall will present "Reason for Hope." Goodall will address her pioneering work with chimpanzees and information about the education, conservation and sustainable development programs of the Jane Goodall Institute. A UN Messenger of Peace,  Goodall travels more than 300 days a year discussing why she is still hopeful about the future and encouraging audiences to recognize their ability to effect change. Tickets are available through Purdue box offices and Ticketmaster. The cost is $15 for all students with a valid student ID and $21 for the general public. Also available are $100 Centennial Seats, which include a $79 charitable contribution to the Centennial Scholarship Fund and a private reception before the event. Additional proceeds from the presentation will benefit the Centennial Scholarship Fund. ** -- April 17. 7 p.m. Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Paul Sarbanes, former senator and co-author of Sarbanes-Oxley Act, will speak as part of the university's Series on Corporate Citizenship and Ethics. Sarbanes is best known for his role in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, a federal law that was enacted in response to a number of major corporate and accounting scandals.

 

STUDENTS

** -- Ongoing. Registration now under way for summer and fall classes. The summer semester begins May 12 and runs through Aug. 1. The fall semester begins Aug. 25 and ends Dec. 20. SEMINARS

** -- April 1. Noon to 5 p.m. Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine. Phi Zeta Research Day. The 21st anniversary celebration, sponsored by Purdue's Omicron chapter of Phi Zeta, the national honor society of veterinary medicine, begins at noon in the hallways of the Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine with poster sessions and short presentations about current research. The keynote address at 4 p.m. will be vaccination lessons from infectious diseases in chickens, including avian influenza, with a lecture from Karel Antoni Schat, professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.

 

CONFERENCES

-- March 21-22. Various campus locations. 2008 Purdue Student Pugwash Midwest Regional Conference. "Energy and the Environment: Powering Future Responsibility." Peter B. Lyons, commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be the featured speaker. Registration is $25 for the general public, $20 for Purdue students and $10 for high school students. -- March 25-27. Stewart Center. The 94th annual Purdue Road School transportation conference. The conference will attract roughly 1,000 transportation officials, consultants and vendors to discuss many of the top current transportation issues in Indiana and around the country. ** -- April 4-10. Various campus, Lafayette and West Lafayette locations. 27th annual Holocaust Remembrance Conference, "Lives Interrupted." Conference will include speakers, exhibits, seminars and performances. A conference schedule is available at https://www.glhrc.org

 

OTHER

** -- March 17-19. Noon to 1 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, South Ballroom. Public forums for the three finalists for the Purdue University provost position. During their respective days, each finalist will speak for roughly 15 minutes followed by a period for audience questions. Don P. Giddens will be featured on March 17, William R. "Randy" Woodson will be featured on March 18, and Camilla Persson Benbow will be featured on March 19.
