Purdue to host industry workshop on high-performance computing

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Affordable supercomputing is making its way into many industries, and an upcoming Purdue University workshop aims at helping businesses make decisions about high-performance computing.

Purdue University's Computing Research Institute's second annual HPC-Industry Workshop will be April 7-8 at Stewart Center on the West Lafayette campus.

Workshop attendance is free. Registration information and the workshop schedule is available online at https://www.cri.purdue.edu/2008industryHPCWorkshop.cfm

Rudolf Eigenmann, professor of electrical and computing engineering and interim director of the Computing Research Institute, said that multi-core, or multi-processor, computers will be a particular focus of the workshop.

"The multi-core issue is much more than just a high-performance computing issue, it is a compelling topic in HPC as well," he said.

High-performance computing is used in a variety of tasks, including aircraft and automotive design, oil exploration and extraction, financial services, and life science research.

"High-performance computing can give a competitive advantage to companies that can harness its potential," Eigenmann said.

Speakers at the workshop will include:

* Andrew Chien, vice president of the corporate technology group and director of research for Intel Corp.

* Jose Munoz, deputy director and senior science adviser for the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyberinfrastructure.

* Dipankar Ghosh, chief engineer for computer-aided engineering at International Truck and Engine Corp., which is the operating company of Navistar International.

* Gerry McCartney, vice president for information technology and CIO of Purdue University.

* Jayathi Murthy, Purdue University professor of mechanical engineering.

* T.N. Vjaykumar, Purdue University associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
