March 11, 2008 Purdue to host industry workshop on high-performance computingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Affordable supercomputing is making its way into many industries, and an upcoming Purdue University workshop aims at helping businesses make decisions about high-performance computing.Purdue University's Computing Research Institute's second annual HPC-Industry Workshop will be April 7-8 at Stewart Center on the West Lafayette campus. Workshop attendance is free. Registration information and the workshop schedule is available online at https://www.cri.purdue.edu/2008industryHPCWorkshop.cfm Rudolf Eigenmann, professor of electrical and computing engineering and interim director of the Computing Research Institute, said that multi-core, or multi-processor, computers will be a particular focus of the workshop. "The multi-core issue is much more than just a high-performance computing issue, it is a compelling topic in HPC as well," he said. High-performance computing is used in a variety of tasks, including aircraft and automotive design, oil exploration and extraction, financial services, and life science research. "High-performance computing can give a competitive advantage to companies that can harness its potential," Eigenmann said. Speakers at the workshop will include: * Andrew Chien, vice president of the corporate technology group and director of research for Intel Corp. * Jose Munoz, deputy director and senior science adviser for the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyberinfrastructure. * Dipankar Ghosh, chief engineer for computer-aided engineering at International Truck and Engine Corp., which is the operating company of Navistar International. * Gerry McCartney, vice president for information technology and CIO of Purdue University. * Jayathi Murthy, Purdue University professor of mechanical engineering. * T.N. Vjaykumar, Purdue University associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.
