Appointments, honors, activities

• Campus activities:

— On March 3, the Purdue Panhellenic Association celebrated International Badge Day for sorority members. Women from all 21 Purdue chapters joined member groups and campuses across the nation to mark this annual tradition of wearing their badges at the workplace and on campus. The activity is sponsored by the National Panhellenic Conference as a way for alumnae and students to recognize the contributions of sorority women and promote the value of fraternal membership.

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Marcia Gentry, director of the Gifted Education Resource Institute and associate professor of educational psychology and research methodology, was awarded the leadership award at the 2008 Indiana Association for the Gifted Conference on Feb. 11-12. The award is presented to an individual whose exemplary leadership and outstanding contribution to gifted education has affected Indiana's children, teachers, schools, programs or policies.

— Judge Linda Chezem, professor in the College of Agriculture and an adjunct professor at the Indiana School of Medicine, will be awarded the Richard M. Fairbanks Circle of Hope Award on May 5. The award recognizes outstanding contributions related to research, education or treatment of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Chezem has developed and implemented the Lawrence County Court Alcohol and Drug Service Program, which was the first of its kind to be certified by the Indiana Division of Addiction Services.

— Suzanne M. Ward, head of Access Services in Purdue Libraries, has earned the 2007 Virginia Boucher-OCLC Distinguished Interlibrary Loan Librarian (ILL) Award. The award recognizes and honors a librarian for outstanding professional achievement, leadership and contributions to ILL and document delivery. The $2,000 award and citation are donated by the Online Computer Library Center, and Ward will receive the honor June 30 at the American Library Association's annual conference in Anaheim, Calif.

– Betsy Hillery, Physical Facilities projects administrator, and Tamm Hoggatt, University Residences assistant director of facilities, presented Purdue's use of its maintenance project management and tracking system to the Facilities Management Maximo Users Group in San Diego, Calif., on Feb. 11. More than 150 people from institutions, including Princeton and Cornell universities learned how to use the Maximo system to maximum benefit.

— Pablo Malavenda,  associate dean of students, was recently elected to serve as the president of the Lafayette Crisis Center Foundation Board. The Lafayette Crisis Center, which was founded in 1970, is a nonprofit human service organization that provides round-the-clock crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and information and referrals in Tippecanoe, White and Benton counties.

• Student honors:

— Purdue's chapter of Net Impact, a network of MBAs and other graduate students and professionals with a focus on business, has been rated "Gold" by the national Net Impact organization. The group from Krannert School of Management met and significantly exceeded the chapter requirements, which includes event planning, membership numbers, faculty and staff involvement, etc. The national organization has more than 120 student and professional chapters on four continents in 75 cities and 80 graduate schools.
