College of Technology at Richmond, Extension offering 'College 101'

RICHMOND, Ind. - Purdue University College of Technology at Richmond faculty and staff are collaborating with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Wayne County to give 4-H students in grades 8-12 a jump-start on college planning.

"College 101 - What You Need to Know Now!" will be held 7-8:30 p.m. March 6 at Middlefork Hall, 2325 Chester Blvd., on the Indiana University East campus, the site of the College of Technology at Richmond.

The evening's program is open only to 4-H students in the area, and invitations to attend have been sent to those eligible.

Michael Swain, student services coordinator for College of Technology at Richmond, said this is the first year the program has been offered in Richmond.

"There are a variety of questions that students in grades 8-12 have about college, and we hope to be able to provide answers and be a resource for them," he said. "The Wayne County Cooperative Extension office approached us about a program we could put on for their young 4-H leaders, and we were happy to tailor something to benefit them."

Swain will lead a tour of the College of Technology at Richmond facilities, discuss how to choose a major, and present information and answer questions about Purdue degree programs, strategies for success in college, financial aid and admissions.

Merwyn Strate, an assistant professor of organizational leadership and supervision at the College of Technology at Richmond, will lead an exercise on leadership.

"If this model is a success, we would love to do future 'College 101' presentations with Extension groups in other counties or any other group that would be interested," Swain said.

The Purdue College of Technology at Richmond offers degrees in computer graphics technology, industrial technology, mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership and supervision.
