February 20, 2008 'Beakman Live!' to feature wild, wacky science experimentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
"Beakman Live!" is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of its Family Adventure series, and is recommended for families and children age 7 and up. Starring Paul Zaloom as the eccentric scientist Beakman, the show combines slapstick humor and real scientific principles to astound audiences of all ages with spectacular demonstrations of concepts including sonic booms, air pressure, center of gravity and persistence of vision, said Kerry Schutt Nason, Purdue Convocations director of marketing. Beakman's stunts include breaking the sound barrier, making a roll of toilet paper fly and lying on a bed of nails. Before the show, representatives from Purdue's Department of Physics PEARLS outreach program will demonstrate basic scientific principles in the West Lobby of the Purdue Stewart Center. Cups of liquid nitrogen ice cream will be available for 25 cents. The demonstrations will begin at 6 p.m. March 7. An award-winning performance artist, puppeteer and political satirist, Zaloom has written, designed and performed 10 solo shows. He's performed his work on nine tours to Europe and in 40 U.S. states, including shows at the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Center. Originally airing on CBS through the 1990s, "Beakman's World" is now in syndication throughout the United States. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students.
