Purdue to hold first expo for construction engineering students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will hold its first construction engineering exposition on Feb. 7 to attract first-year engineering students to the field and help companies recruit summer interns.

About 30 construction companies will attend the Catch the Spirit of Construction Engineering @ Purdue Industry Expo 2008. The event will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the third floor of Stewart Center, said Makarand Hastak, a professor of civil engineering and head of Purdue's Division of Construction Engineering & Management.

"Purdue engineering students from all disciplines are invited, as well as select regional high school students who are interested in construction as a potential career choice," Hastak said.

The event will enable students to learn about internship opportunities for next summer, select a specialty area to explore through an internship and receive career advice from industry professionals, he said.

Company representatives will staff booths set up in Stewart Center.

"The companies will describe what their businesses are all about and the different opportunities available to students, from internships to full-time jobs," Hastak said. "This is primarily targeted toward freshman engineering students. They will learn about studies, both major and minor options, and careers in construction engineering. Students have an option of taking a minor in construction engineering. The hope is that they will sign up for the program."

The registration deadline is Feb. 5. Companies interested in registering may contact Kathy Walters at (765) 494-2758, kw@purdue.edu. General information is available from Nettie Haab at (765) 494-2244, nhaab@purdue.edu and from the expo Web site at https://www.conf.purdue.edu/CEMExpo.
