January 28, 2008 Seminar to focus on northern Indiana soil managementWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Northern Indiana Soil Management Seminar will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Martin Room at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen."It is shaping up to be a period of great transition for agriculture, and this seminar will provide an opportunity for farmers to hear some of the latest information on a number of relevant topics from specialists around the state," said Andrew Westfall, Purdue University Extension educator. Experts leading sessions include: * Lance Murrel, consulting agronomist, will speak about basic soil properties and tips for maximizing soil fertility. * Brad Joern, Purdue agronomy professor, will discuss the latest information related to manure/nutrient management planning and implementation. * Fred Whitford, coordinator of the Purdue Pesticide Program, will lead a session to help farmers learn correct procedures for reporting, transporting and securing cargo. * John Obermeyer, Purdue entomologist, will discuss an overview of methods for identifying and controlling pest infestations and offer advice for combating and eliminating crop pests.
