January 18, 2008 Schools invited to sign up for Web design contest in AndersonWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Teams of high school students are invited to compete in the first Community Service Web Design Contest at the Purdue College of Technology at Anderson. The event will take place from 9:15 a.m. to noon Feb. 29 at the campus, located at 2705 Enterprise Drive in the Flagship Industrial Park. All high schools in east-central Indiana are welcome to send teams, and there is no cost for schools to compete. The objective is to challenge high school students to design and create a Web site on any topic that serves the community, such as local tourism, school pride, local sports, community environmental issues or a biography of a local person, said Gary Randolph, an associate professor of computer and information technology. "We hope to encourage students to apply what they are learning about Web creation in school or on their own to create Web sites that educate and serve their communities," said Randolph, who is heading up the contest. "We are also planning activities for that day in which students can learn about Web development careers and how to prepare for them." On contest day, students will load their entries onto a Web server, demonstrate their Web pages for the judges, then leave to hear a speaker on Web-related careers or technology while the judges deliberate. Students will reconvene after the judges have made their decision. Winners will be announced, and each team will receive written feedback from the judges. A team of judges will evaluate the entries based on the application of visual appeal and style, standards-based Web design, adherence to copyright laws, and use of techniques for accessibility by the visually impaired. Judges include Jeffrey Bull, an Anderson consultant, and John Collier of JD Collier Design & Consulting. Sponsors are Computer Renaissance of Anderson, Deltec Information Solutions of Muncie and Innovative Technical Solutions Inc. of Pendleton. Additional details about the contest can be found at https://www.tech.purdue.edu/anderson/webcontest. Interested schools should contact Randolph at (765) 648-2906, gbrandolph@purdue.edu, to obtain an application. Applications must be received by Feb. 4.
