January 18, 2008 Enchantment Theatre Company to present 'The Velveteen Rabbit'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The event is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of its Family Adventures series. Convocations also is sponsoring a special pre-show event, recommended for children ages 5-8, that includes lunch and storytelling by the Tippecanoe Storytellers Guild. The lunchtime party will be from 12:30-2 p.m. Feb. 2 in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118. The cost is $15 for adults and $12 for children; to make reservations, call (765) 494-9712 by Jan. 28. Ticket-holders also are invited to see real velveteen rabbits at the Columbian Park petting zoo before the show. The petting zoo will be open for visitors at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Stewart Center West Lobby. "Based on the beloved book by Margery Williams, 'The Velveteen Rabbit' tells the story of a plush toy bunny that comes to life through the transforming power of a boy's love," said Laura Clavio, Purdue Convocations assistant director. "Known for its innovative, evocative productions, the Enchantment Theatre Company of Philadelphia brings this captivating tale to life with masked actors, larger-than-life puppets, spectacular magic, beautiful backdrops and an original score by Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer Don Sebesky and award-winning lyricist Gloria Nissenson." Sebesky has received 25 Grammy nominations, three Tony nominations, three Emmy Award nominations and has won four Clio Awards. His work has included composing, arranging and producing for artists including Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and Vanessa Williams. As a composer, arranger and conductor, he has worked with orchestras such as the London Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Pops and the New York Philharmonic, and has many Broadway theater, film and television credits to his name. Nissenson is a multi-award winning lyricist whose credits include recordings, theater, television and film. Many artists in the pop, R&B and country fields have recorded her songs. They include a top 10 country hit, "Heavenly Bodies," recorded by Earl Thomas Conley. The original score of "The Velveteen Rabbit," titled "The Velveteen Rabbit - Love Can Make You Real," was recently nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children. For more than 25 years, Enchantment Theatre Company has produced original theater for school groups and families using its signature blend of magic, mask, pantomime, puppetry and original music. Enchantment has toured its original productions around world and performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Enchantment also has toured in the Far East six times, performing in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The company also has appeared with major orchestras nationwide, including the Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, Minnesota, Cleveland, Ohio, and Seattle orchestras.
