A new Purdue University Galleries exhibition will show insight into the developments of fashion design and apparel technology from the 1850s through the present.

The exhibit, "Fashion Forward: Selections from the Purdue University Division of Theatre Special Collection of Historic Dress," will be on display from Jan. 22 to Feb. 1 in the Patti and Rusty Rueff East Gallery at the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. It will feature examples of clothing and accessories drawn from the Division of Theatre Special Collection of Historic Dress.

"The collection is an evolving and growing educational archive chronicling the styles in fashion and adornment from the mid-19th century to the present through tangible garments and accessories," said Joel Ebarb, exhibit curator and associate professor of theater. "Starting as a small collection of pieces from the Purdue Theatre costume stock considered too important or fragile for stage use, the Special Collection has grown over the years to include hundreds of items, ranging from clothing and accessories, to jewelry, shoes, hats and more."

The exhibit will include around 40 women's fashions; future exhibitions will focus on men's fashion or other themes, Ebarb said.

"I think visitors to the exhibit will enjoy the interesting pieces I have selected, including a 1930s negligee, a monkey fur coat from the 1940s, dresses by 1960s designers Emilio Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer, and an evening gown worn to a state dinner at the White House in 1982," he said.

A special reception will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the East Gallery.

The Rueff Galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Individuals or groups also can contact Ebarb for a guided tour. To make arrangements, call (765) 494-2144 or e-mail ebarb@purdue.edu.

This ensemble from around 1865 was most likely worn by an unmarried young woman for activities outside the home. It displays the classic elements of women's fashions of the 1860s: a fitted bodice cut with "pagoda" sleeves and a flounced peplum, a skirt whose silhouette is changing from round to oval by expanding toward the back, and bright colors enabled by the discovery of aniline dyes in 1856. The dress will be among the items in the Fashion Forward exhibit on display Jan. 22 to Feb. 1 in the Patti and Rusty Rueff East Gallery at the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.
