College Bowl to offer Purdue students chance to show smarts

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University students who want to show off their academic knowledge and quick recall will be able to sign up to compete in the upcoming College Bowl competition.

Students can form teams of at least three people to compete in the campus competition, which will take place at noon Feb. 2 in Stewart Center, Room 307. The Purdue Student Union Board is sponsoring the competition

Interested teams can sign up for the competition in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 268, or download a signup sheet at https://www.union.purdue.edu/psub. Each team must pay a $20 registration fee.

College Bowl is a question-and-answer game combining academic material, popular culture, current events and sports in a format emphasizing quick recall. The program is a tradition on many U.S. campuses and is similar to the radio and television series of the same name that ran during the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Nearly 300 colleges and universities will compete in this year's College Bowl, said Margie Stoltz, Purdue Student Union Board program manager.

The game features two teams of four players each who compete to score points by correctly answering questions. The questions come from topics including literature, science, history, geography, religion, social sciences, multiculturalism, the arts, popular culture, sports and current events.

The winning team will advance to the regional tournament at Southern Illinois University on Feb. 22-23. Last year's winning team advanced to the College Bowl National Championship.

College Bowl is organized and administered with the cooperation of the Association of College Unions - International.
