January 4, 2008 Poetry Slam to offer platform for aspiring writers at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Aspiring poets will have a chance to share their literary works at the Poetry Slam at Purdue University.Sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board, the Poetry Slam will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Purdue Memorial Union Commons near Starbucks. The event is free and open to the public. "This event encourages young artists to attend as well as eager listeners," said Molly Harris, Purdue Student Union Board project leader. "The Poetry Slam offers a welcome atmosphere for fresh talent." Students interested in reading at the event must sign up in advance. A sign-up sheet will be in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 268, beginning Monday (Jan. 7). Writers will be given guidelines for their poetry at that time. A panel composed of audience members will rate each poem, and prizes from local businesses will be awarded. Top-scoring students will advance to the regional tournament Feb. 22-23 at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
