November 27, 2007 Viola virtuoso Jennifer Stumm to perform at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The performance, which is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of its Classics series, is a Discovery Concert - a showcase of up-and-coming artists. Stumm has earned accolades worldwide for her virtuosity and commanding stage presence, said Kerry Schutt Nason, Purdue Convocations director of marketing. As first-prize winner in the 2006 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, she is the first solo violist in the 55-year history of the competition to win the jury's unanimous vote. Highlights of Stumm's 2007-08 season include her recital debut at the Kennedy Center on the Washington Performing Arts Society Series, appearances at Wigmore Hall in London, Ravinia Festival's "Rising Stars Series" in Chicago and a performance of the Walton Viola Concerto with the New Haven Symphony. Recent appearances include debuts at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the "Grachten" Festival in Amsterdam, at the International Viola Congress in Montreal, the Kilkenny Festival in Ireland and performances with orchestra at Alice Tully Hall in New York and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester with Yan-Pascal Tortellier conducting. A native of Atlanta, Stumm began viola studies at age 8 in her school's orchestra program. She received a bachelor's degree in music from Philadelphia's Curtis Institute and a master's degree in music from The Juilliard School. She devotes time to master classes and educational outreach to help inspire younger musicians, Nason said. Stumm's program will feature works including "Märchenbilder," by Robert Schumann, "The Stream Flows" by Bright Sheng; Sonata in F minor, op. 120 no. 1, by Johannes Brahms; "Lachrymae," by Benjamin Britten; and Sonata for Viola and Piano by Rebecca Clarke. Pianist Elizabeth Pridgen, a graduate of The Julliard School and the Peabody Conservatory of Music, will join Stumm. Pridgen has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, the Silk Road Ensemble and the Mark Morris Dance Group, and frequently collaborates with members of the New York Philharmonic and the Boston and Atlanta symphony orchestras.
