November 19, 2007 Holiday tuba music tradition to continue at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Players of the tuba and other low brass instruments are invited to join the band for the Greater Lafayette TubaChristmas concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 in the lobby of Purdue's Stewart Center. Purdue Bands and Brent's Bench, a musical instrument repair shop in Lafayette, co-sponsor the annual event, which attracts dozens of community and student brass players. The 2007 event will be the fifth one held in the Stewart Center lobby under the mural. Admission is free.Musicians will rehearse at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and then perform for the public at 7 p.m. Participating musicians will pay a $5 registration fee. Nationally, TubaChristmas is entering its 34th year. Indiana University professor Harvey Phillips designed the concert to draw tuba and euphonium players of all different ages and backgrounds together and to give their sound a special showcase. The first performance took place at New York City's Rockefeller Plaza ice rink in 1974. This year, TubaChristmas performances will take place in more than 40 states and several foreign countries. In Indiana, TubaChristmas performances will take place in five different cities including West Lafayette. Musicians can find out more information by contacting Michael Plake at (765) 567-2264.
