Online chat about horses to feature Purdue expert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service horse specialist will provide tips on how to select that first horse for your family during an online chat on Nov. 7.

Colleen Brady will join with other panelists to take questions regarding first-time horse ownership. The online chat time is at 3 p.m. Eastern time and is sponsored by the eXtension HorseQuest team.

Brady said choosing the right first horse is critical because the experience will impact a family's future involvement with horses, especially if this is their first exposure to the animals.

"It is important to go into horse ownership with your eyes wide open in order to create a positive experience for everyone," Brady said.

Those participating in the chat will have the opportunity to win a copy of "Our First Horse: Considerations Before you Buy" a video/DVD created by Purdue. Five winners will be randomly drawn from chat participants who complete a follow-up survey.

In addition to Brady, other horse experts participating include:

* David Freeman, Oklahoma State University

* Kathy Anderson, University of Nebraska

* Rusty Miller, North Carolina A&T State University
