Parking, security information for the Oct. 26 Dalai Lama talk

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Convocations is making details available about parking and security for Friday's (Oct. 26) talk by the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

Tickets for the talk, which will be at 2 p.m. in Purdue's Elliott Hall of Music, are sold out. His speech, titled "Cultivating Happiness," will draw from Tibetan Buddhist and other religious and intellectual traditions. Portions of the public talk will be provided through a translator.

Because the event is occurring during the workday, special parking for the public talk has been reserved in the campus South Lot (south of Discovery Park), which is at the corner of Nimitz Drive and Gates Road, and the south section of the intramural sports fields, located on Airport Road south of Ind. 26. Shuttle buses, as well as regular CityBus routes, will be available to shuttle patrons between those lots and the talk. Shuttles will run noon to 2 p.m. and from the conclusion of the talk to 6 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to use these lots since campus garages will be filled. More details and parking maps are available online at https://www.purdue.edu/convos/dalailama.shtml .

Doors to the theater will open at 12:30 p.m., and extra security measures will be implemented. Patrons are asked to arrive early to clear security screening and be seated by 2 p.m. No one will be seated after the Dalai Lama is on stage. All attendees will be subject to security checks by metal detectors and possible search. No backpacks, large bags, cameras, cell phones or electronic items will be permitted through security. Small handbags are permitted and subject to search. No food or drinks will be permitted in the theater.

The talk will be preceded by informal cultural presentations from the Tibetan tradition. Following the talk, there will be a brief question-and-answer period with the Dalai Lama. Questions may be submitted in advance by noon Tuesday (Oct. 23) via e-mail to convos@purdue.edu  or by fax to (765) 494-0540.
