September 27, 2007 Veterinary oncology lecture marks anniversary of radiation treatment facilityWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - To mark the one-year anniversary of the Linda and William Fleischhauer Radiation Facility, Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine will present an Oct. 4 lecture that explains how radiation therapy is making a difference for animal cancer patients being treated at Purdue.Facility director Wallace B. Morrison will discuss "Beating Cancer in Dogs and Cats: The Power of External Beam Radiation Therapy at Purdue." The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be at 6:30 p.m. in Lynn Hall, Room 1136. The event coincides with the Purdue University President's Council Back to Class program. "We can now treat more kinds of cancer in a new way," Morrison said of the facility, which contains a linear accelerator that targets cancerous tissue with highly focused radiation. "It has made a big difference to many of our patients because it offers more choice in treating cancer. We have had good results." Deborah Knapp, the Dolores L. McCall Professor of Veterinary Medicine, co-director of the Purdue Comparative Oncology program and a veterinary medical oncologist, also will briefly discuss other types of cancer care for pet animals available in the school's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. In addition, members of the Purdue Comparative Oncology team will talk about ways in which treating animal cancer patients also can help in the fight against cancer in humans. The radiation therapy unit is named for the Fleischhauers, who gave $1 million to complete the state's first facility equipped with a linear accelerator for treating cancer in small animals. The Fleischhauers, of Lafayette and Naples, Fla., have been in the student housing business in West Lafayette for 30 years. They also own a home and commercial construction business in Florida. They are longtime pet owners, animal lovers and clients of Purdue's veterinary hospital.
