September 26, 2007 Author, inspirational speaker to visit Purdue UniversityWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Joan Brock, who lost her sight from a rare eye disease at the age of 32, will talk at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Sponsored by the Beta Iota Chapter of Delta Gamma sorority and the Purdue Panhellenic Association, the event is free and open to the public. The lecture is funded through the endowment of the Dorothy Garrett Martin Lectureship in Values and Ethics at Purdue. Brock was working for the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School when she lost her sight over a three-week period. Five years later, she lost her husband to cancer and was left to raise her young daughter as a blind, single parent. Brock's book, "More Than Meets the Eye," has been translated into several languages and was also a Reader's Digest Condensed Book in 1995. In 2003, her life story was portrayed in a Lifetime Television Network movie called "More Than Meets the Eye: The Joan Brock Story." Brock now lives in Tucson, Ariz., and has been a special guest on the Today Show. This is the third annual lectureship sponsored by Delta Gamma. Previous speakers included Robin Roberts and Amy Tan, whose lecture was co-sponsored by Purdue Libraries.
