September 17, 2007 Sitarist Anoushka Shankar to bring innovative sound to PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Purdue Convocations is presenting the Anoushka Shankar Project as part of its World Stage series. Shankar, the daughter and musical protégé of sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, has been playing and studying the sitar since she was 9. At age 13, she made her recording debut on the album "In Celebration," a tribute to the works of her father. Her subsequent solo releases, "Anoushka" in 1998 and "Anourag" in 2000, honored her father's celebrated traditional style, and "Live at Carnegie Hall" in 2001 earned Shankar her first Grammy nomination. The 2005 release of "Rise" marked a breakthrough for Shankar as she established her own multi-dimensional world music sound – a fusion of East and West that features both acoustic and electric instrumentation. The album received positive reviews throughout the world and gave Shankar another Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary World Music category. In August, 26-year-old Shankar released "Breathing Under Water," a collaboration with producer and songwriter Karsh Kale that, like "Rise," remains rooted in Indian classical music yet expands beyond cultural and traditional borders with electronica beats and melodies. Drawing on her classical training and background and highlighting her more recent innovations, Shankar's Purdue performance will showcase her Indian traditional style as well as the contemporary works from her Grammy-nominated CD "Rise." The concert also will include a few acoustic pieces from her latest release. Shankar will be joined by an ensemble of Eastern and Western musicians. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $26 for adults and $19 for children 18 years and younger and Purdue and Ivy Tech Lafayette students.Writer: Christy Jones, (765) 494-1089, christyjones@purdue.edu Source: Kerry Schutt Nason, Purdue Convocations director of marketing, (765) 494-5045, knason@purdue.edu
