September 10, 2007 College celebrates liberal arts in OctoberWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
"Experience Liberal Arts month aims to highlight the ubiquity and variety of the liberal arts on the Purdue campus," says John Contreni, Justin S. Morrill Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. "Throughout October, faculty, students and guests will exemplify different threads in the rich tapestry of the arts, humanities, behavioral sciences and social sciences that make up Purdue's liberal arts programs." The month will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in 11 departmental and 14 interdisciplinary programs. The keystone events feature the Dalai Lama and award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates, who are speaking on Oct. 26 and 30, respectively. West Lafayette Mayor Jan Mills is proclaiming October as Experience Liberal Arts month. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The events are: * Continuing through Oct. 7. Stewart Center Gallery "Deborah Muirhead: Past is Present." Galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. * Continuing through Oct. 7. Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union. Beaded Prayers Project, a community-centered, collaborative outreach project based on an African tradition of sealed amulets containing powerful contents, such as sacred text and medicines. The tradition seeks to bring together people of many cultures, creeds and ethnicities through collaborative art, said Sonya Clark, artist curator. Galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. * Oct. 1. 3:30 p.m. Black Cultural Center. Miriam dos Santos Jorge, associate professor from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizante, Brazil, will present "Affirmative Action in Brazil: Affirming Rights or Ideologies." Sponsored by the African American Studies and Research Center and the College of Education. The Diversity Resource Center and the Office of Affirmative Action also are co-sponsoring the event. * Oct. 1. 7 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Lecture Series. John Coatsworth, professor of history and Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs and interim dean at Harvard University, will present "Inequality, Intervention and Immigration: The Future of U.S.-Latin American Relations." Barry G. Rabe, professor of public policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, professor of environmental policy, School of Natural Resources and Environment, and faculty associate in the Program in the Environment at the University of Michigan, will present "States on Steroids: The Intergovernmental Odyssey of American Climate Policy."
