Purdue University President France A. Córdova will continue the tradition of overseeing the President's Leadership Class, which will begin Monday evening (Aug. 27) at Discovery Park.

Córdova will address the class at 6 p.m. in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 129. Alan Rebar, executive director of Discovery Park, also will speak before a tour of the park's research facilities.

William Oakes, associate professor of engineering education and director of Engineering Projects in Community Service, or EPICS; and Gabriela Weaver, associate professor of chemical education and physical chemistry; will offer advice about faculty expectations for student success and discuss their Purdue programs with the leadership class.

Purdue students Akshay Thomas and Kay Pezzanite will talk briefly at 7 p.m. about their recent research projects completed through the Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Initiative, which is led by the park's Discovery Learning Center.

Following that, Rebar will give a presentation on Discovery Park and assist in a tour of research laboratories and offices in the Bindley Bioscience Center, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Gerald D. and Edna E. Mann Hall, and the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship.

Córdova will be joined at the class by her husband, Chris Foster, who is director of Discovery Park's K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics education programs.

The President's Leadership Class, which was launched in 2000, consists of 30 newly admitted first-year students. Participants were selected for the class based on academic merit, leadership breadth, roles in high school, service activities, and awards and recognitions.

Among the members of this year's leadership class is Allias Jones, a former Science Bound student beginning his Purdue academic career in engineering. Science Bound helps students in the Indianapolis Public Schools system earn a full scholarship to Purdue to study for a career in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
