Girls of all races ages 12-14 will show how they adjust to campus life this summer while taking part in Purdue's Camp Calcium, a research effort that studies how calcium and other nutrients affect the body. This year's camp will focus on measuring the effects of vitamin D on calcium absorption. Córdova invites campus community to ice cream social on her first day as Purdue president July 16. 3:30-5 p.m. Steps of Hovde Hall. France Córdova, who begins as Purdue president on Monday (July 16), will hold "Handshakes and Milkshakes" for the Purdue community her first day on the job. All Purdue students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the event, which will take place on the steps of Hovde Hall and on the adjacent Purdue Mall. Purdue President France Córdova at Indiana Black Expo July 20. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. President France Córdova will make her first major public appearance at Indiana's Black Expo. Times are being reserved now for media interviews. From 11-11:45 a.m., she will be available for interviews while she visits the Purdue booth, located at the entrance to Hall E of the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. At noon she will address the Youth Summit at the nearby Hyatt Regency. Scholars discuss how blogs, MySpace, role-playing games affect citizenship July 24. 11:30 a.m. Purdue Memorial Union West Faculty Lounge. David McDivitt, a teacher from Converse, Ind., will talk about how he uses a World War II role-playing game in his high school history classes. His talk is part of the second James F. Ackerman Colloquium on Technology and Citizenship Education in July. Two dozen scholars will attend the conference, "Education for Citizenship in Digital and Synthetic Works: Privacy, Protection and Participation," on July 23-26. Purdue Memorial Union staffers assist community nonprofit organizations July 24. 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ford Dining Court. Dozens of Purdue Memorial Union managers will spend the day volunteering at five Lafayette area organizations. Volunteers will go fishing with Indiana Veterans Home residents and help with the animals at Almost Home Humane Society. Volunteers also will be cleaning and/or painting at the animal shelter, Lafayette Transitional Housing, Imagination Station and Habitat for Humanity. Summer entrepreneurship program for high school students July 29 through Aug. 3. Purdue Research Park and various campus locations. The Entrepreneurship Academy is a weeklong summer academy for high school juniors and seniors to help them identify a viable business idea, test the concept's feasibility, determine the best way to make the business competitive, identify capital needs to start it and devise a plan to successfully manage it. They'll finish by vying for awards, including college tuition vouchers, as they present executive summaries in a two-minute "elevator pitch." Participants will come from the 14 north central Indiana counties of Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, Warren and White. The academy is sponsored by the Purdue Research Foundation with a $35,000 grant from Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development.
