Grupo Fantasma returns to Purdue for third time for free concert

Based in Austin, Texas, Grupo Fantasma features Spanish-language vocals and a four-piece horn section anchored by a percussion and rhythm section. The band fuses Afro-Latin funk, cumbia, hip-hop, salsa and merengue to create their own sound.
"Grupo Fantasma has made exciting strides in their musical careers since last year, and we're excited to watch their progress as they make their third appearance at Purdue," said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center. "Their presence serves to bring our students together with the entire greater Lafayette community to appreciate our culture and celebrate the future of Latino music."
The 11-man group was named best Latin contemporary band five times at the Austin Music Awards. Their first album, released in 2001, earned them spots on internationally distributed compilations, an NPR special and the soundtrack to director John Sayles’ film, "Casa de los Babys."
