Purdue veterinary students to help homeless cats find owners
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University student chapter of the American Association of Feline Practitioners is sponsoring an adoption event on March 24 as a community project in partnership with the Tippecanoe Humane Society.Hope for Homeless Cats will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wabash Landing, 335 Brown St. The students hope to find homes for adult cats that otherwise would have difficulty being adopted from the Humane Society.
"Last year we held this event in downtown Lafayette and found homes for 15 cats," said Veronica Acebey, president of the School of Veterinary Medicine student organization. "This year, the cats we are adopting out have a mean age of two years. They are wonderful pets, but don't usually find homes because they aren't kittens anymore."
Veterinary students will perform exams and show new owners how to care for their pets. The students will emphasize the importance of good nutrition, parasite control, prevention of infectious diseases (including those that can be transmitted to humans), management of behavioral issues and regular visits to a veterinarian.
