March 7, 2007 Purdue students seek sites for upcoming volunteer workday WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Homeowners in West Lafayette who need extra assistance around their homes may be eligible for some helping hands on March 31 during the Boiler Blast community action day.Sponsored by the Boiler Volunteer Network and staffed by students from a number of campus organizations, the annual event places student volunteers at different locations throughout the community from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help with spring cleaning chores. More than 1,100 students took part in last year's event, which is held in conjunction with West Lafayette's city neighborhood clean-up project Clean Sweep. "Boiler Blast is just a small way that students can show their appreciation to the West Lafayette community," said Samantha Dummel, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts from Chesterton, Ind., and president of the Boiler Blast. "Volunteers will be going out to homes in the area and helping with a variety of projects, such as painting, gardening or washing windows for residents that may not be able to work on their own homes or yards." Local residents who would like to request volunteer help can contact the Boiler Blast office by March 17 at (765) 494-2454 or go online to https://www.purdue.edu/boilerblast Writer: Christy Jones, (765) 494-1089, christyjones@purdue.edu Sources: Samantha Dummel, Boiler Blast president, (765) 496-2454, sdummel@purdue.edu Connie Baltzell III, Boiler Blast community relations, (812) 430-8098, clbaltze@purdue.edu Harry Brown, assistant dean of students and director of Boiler Volunteer Network, (765) 494-2450, hebrown@purdue.edu
