February 20, 2007 Van Cliburn Competition finalist Davide Cabassi to perform WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Cabassi made his orchestral debut at the age of 13 with the Television Italiana Symphony Orchestra in Milan, and his star has continued to rise with major orchestras throughout Europe. He has collaborated with the Munich Philharmonic, the Neue Philharmonic Westfalen and the Russian Chamber Philharmonic, as well as several Italian orchestras. In 2006 his debut disc for Sony-BMG records, "Dancing with the Orchestra," was released worldwide. He also was prominently featured in the film documentary about the Twelfth Van Cliburn Competition, "In the Heart of the Music," which began airing on PBS station in October 2005. Todd Wetzel, director of Convocations, said he was drawn to book Cabassi because of the pianist's charismatic and expressive performance technique. "Cabassi's performance will be an excellent introduction for aspiring pianists as well as those new to piano repertoire, both because of his warmth and openness and because the works he will perform provide a great overview of classical tradition, he said. In a special partnership with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Cabassi will spend a week in the Greater Lafayette community performing in recital and extensive arts education activities for Convocations, He also will perform in an orchestral concerto engagement with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra on March 3.
