Baldo comic-strip creator to speak at Purdue MLK week celebration

Cantú will speak about "Lowriders, Abuelitas and Chica Power! Fighting for a Voice on the Funny Pages." His talk, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.
"Baldo is a cartoon about a daydreaming teenager, but the message of overcoming prejudice and stereotypes comes out loud and clear. Mr. Cantú is the perfect voice for our Martin Luther King Jr. celebration," said Alysa Christmas Rollock, vice president for human relations.
Following his presentation, Cantú will conduct a signing for his two books, "The Lower You Ride, The Cooler You Are" and "Night of the Bilingual Telemarketers." A limited quantity will be available for purchase at $10 each with cash or check.
In addition to writing the comic, Cantú is an editor at Quick, a daily news tabloid in Dallas that targets young readers. He was managing editor of Hispanic Business magazine and previously wrote a newspaper column for Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service that examined business and marketing issues in Hispanic America.
Cantú has appeared on CNN, National Public Radio and the nationally syndicated television special "Hispanic America: The Year in Review." He is an expert on the U.S. Hispanic market and has been quoted by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and USA Today.
Purdue's Martin Luther King Jr. celebration also will include a Day of Service followed by an appreciation luncheon on Jan. 15. Volunteers can register to help area non-profit organizations by calling (765) 496-2450 by Jan. 11.
On Jan. 17, a video and discussion, "At Our Borders and in the Heartland: Are Promises being kept to Latinos in America?," will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 313. The event is open to the public.
Martin Luther King Jr. events are sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Human Relations in collaboration with the Diversity Resource Office, Black Cultural Center, African American Studies and Research Center, Office of the Vice President for Housing and Food Services, Latino Cultural Center and the Boiler Volunteer Network.
