Purdue Galleries to look at 'Global Matrix'

"Global Matrix II: An International Print Exhibition" will be presented Jan. 8 to Feb. 18 in both the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Purdue Memorial Union and the Stewart Center Gallery.

Purdue Galleries developed the exhibit as a contemporary review of fine art printmaking in all media from around the world. Included are woodcuts, etchings, silk screens, lithographs and digitally produced original prints.

The first installment of "Global Matrix" was presented at Purdue University Galleries and six other venues from 2002-04. This second installment revisits the world of international printmaking five years later, revealing the continued refinement of several returning exhibitors and opening the doors to new imagery from individual artists whose work has not previously been seen here.

Working together to select works for "Global Matrix II" were: Kathryn Reeves, professor of art and design at Purdue; Kimberly Vito, associate professor of art and art history at Wright State University; Sean Caulfield, associate professor of art and design at the University of Alberta; and Craig Martin, director of the Purdue University Galleries.

Reeves, Vito and Martin previously collaborated on the first installment of "Global Matrix" in 2002. Caulfield was an exhibitor in the first "Global Matrix" and has participated in a wide range of national and international exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan.

The curators reviewed submissions based upon quality of image, concept and inventiveness of approach, while looking to include a wide representation of geographic origins. The review included submissions by more than 565 artists from 53 countries. The resulting exhibit features a total of 87 works representing 75 individual artists from 24 countries around the world.

"The age-old practice of printmaking is well represented around the world by artists with a common interest in working with graphic matrices like wood, stone and metal plates," Martin said. "It is truly a pleasure to review their images and visit the diverse realms of their invention. 'Global Matrix II' will represent a very wide range of images and approaches — truly something for everyone to see."

The Galleries will host receptions in both the Ringel and Stewart Center galleries from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 11.

The Galleries' periodic printmaking exhibits such as "Global Matrix" and "Sixty Square Inches" offer the opportunity for hands-on relief printing demonstrations and presentations on the history and development of printmaking for the regional K-12 educational community and interested area groups. After its initial presentation at Purdue University Galleries, the exhibition will travel to art venues throughout the United States into 2009. Currently on board for the traveling exhibit are the Priebe Art Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh; the Higgins Art Gallery at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable, Mass.; the Wright State University Art Galleries in Dayton, Ohio; the Lore Degenstein Gallery at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.; and the Altgeld Gallery at the Northern Illinois University Art Museum in DeKalb, Ill.; with several other venues to be finalized.

The Robert L. Ringel Gallery and the Stewart Center Gallery are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday; and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. All Purdue Galleries exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.
