Earhart Hall administrators and staff raised more $1,000 for the Purdue United Way Campaign by holding a labor auction on Nov. 9.

Earhart's 10 administrators each donated 10 hours of service, which was divided into packages of four, three, two and one-hour segments for the auction. Bidding started at $5 an hour.

"We've done a variety of things in the past to support the United Way, and we use input from staff on these activities and on where they'd like to see the money directed," says Ken Field, general manager of Earhart Hall. "When we were brainstorming this year, the idea for the labor auction came up. We set our goal at $500 and ended up with double that due to the generosity of all of our employees, particularly our hourly staff."

So far, administrators have plated desserts, grilled hamburgers and helped staff with a variety of other tasks.

"Our auction served two purposes: to raise money for a great cause and to help administrators have a better feel for the different jobs hourly staff do on daily basis," Field said. "My package was bid on by food service staff and service staff, and I spent an afternoon cleaning restrooms on floors. I had the chance to see the process and the steps involved. It was very eye-opening."

Staff presented a check for $1,010 to James Taylor, executive director of United Way of Greater Lafayette, during a lunch on Wednesday.

"We're glad that we could help and look forward to doing it again next year," Field said.
