Purdue faculty, staff and students rose to the challenge this year, helping Purdue raise more than $767,000 for the United Way Campaign. The campaign total of $767,842 was revealed at a victory celebration Tuesday. The campaign officially passed its goal of $730,000 on Nov. 4. "Thanks to the amazing generosity of our faculty, staff and retirees, we are able to celebrate another Purdue success," said Dennis Depew, 2009 campaign chair and dean of the College of Technology. "We surpassed our highest expectations this year." At the Purdue celebration in Purdue Memorial Union, President France A. Córdova expressed gratitude to the campus community for the compassion, hard work, and dedication put into the campaign. "The Purdue community has a history of service and generosity," she said. "At a time when our neighbors need it most, through United Way and this campaign, we extended a helping hand -- and then some! "Our generous donations to United Way will not only help our human service agencies continue helping their clients, but will also keep our community safe and strong. Today everyone in the Purdue family can be proud of what we’ve done for our community." Christine Ladisch, campaign vice chair and vice provost for academic affairs, shared highlights of the campaign, including: * Purdue has 35 new Vanguards (those who give $1,000 or more) and is the top organization in the community for Vanguard givers. * Purdue employee donors increased from 3,587 last year to 4,054 in 2009. * Sixteen of 19 Purdue areas met or surpassed their goals for 2009. * Many areas and departments held special events totaling more than $11,000 in donations. * Purdue retirees surpassed their goal for 2009 by donating more than $89,000 to the campaign.
