Boiler Volunteer Network gathering donations for food bank

Food drive donations

The Boiler Volunteer Network kicked off its ninth annual Fall Harvest Food Drive on Oct. 26.

Students, faculty and staff will be able to donate to the food drive through Nov. 21. All donations will benefit Food Finders Food Bank.

Members of five campus categories including academic departments or offices, student organizations, and residence halls or floors, will compete to see who can collect the greatest number of pounds of food. The top group within each category will receive a prize.

The food bank is seeking non-perishable items such as canned vegetables, canned tuna or canned chicken, rice, beans, soups, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruits, cereal, flour and juices.

In 2008, BVN collected around 20,000 pounds of food. Nine University academic and administrative units participated in last year's food drive, and Purdue Telefund donated the most in that category with 1,310 pounds.

Twenty-five student organizations, six residence halls, several fraternities and sororities, and eight other organizations also participated. Four people also placed donations as individuals.

This year the goal weight is 14,000 pounds of food. To participate in the event, visit the BVN office in Room G4, Stewart Center, to pick up registration forms and boxes. Anyone can participate without registering, however. The forms are simply to help the volunteers anticipate how much food will be donated.

Donors are welcome to give food as individuals or collect items as a group. For more information or to obtain a donation box for a group or department, call BVN at 49-62450 or e-mail bvn@purdue.edu.
