This week's 'Thumbs Up' recipients

"Thumbs Up" gives faculty and staff the chance to recognize others on campus for a job well done.

This week's "Thumbs Up" go to:

Physical Facilities work crews: Thank you for doing a great job in renovating the portico and entrance area of Young Hall. The new paint, electrical fixtures, and front garden bed give the building the final touch to match the newly installed exterior curtain wall.  Your courteous and professional work ethic was appreciated. -- Alysa Christmas Rollock

Tom Atkinson, Pat Springer, Don Brier and Graduate School staff:  I would like to give a huge "Thumbs Up" to Tom Atkinson, Pat Springer, Don Brier and the rest of the staff at the Graduate School. They are very pleasant to work with and have helped us tremendously on numerous occasions to solve some very challenging issues. I, for one, am very appreciative to all of them for all they do! -- Nancy Eberle

Tony Hayden and Mark Anthrop: I would like to recognize Tony Hayden and Mark Anthrop at Printing Services, who went out of their way to assist with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation presentation by Apollo 13 astronaut James Lovell. When it was discovered that the oversize check to be presented at the event had been misplaced, Printing Services stepped up to print and mount a replacement check in less than an hour. This was truly an above-and-beyond effort, and  helped to make the event a success. -- C. Blake Powers

Lori Beth Hettinger: I would like to thank Lori Beth Hettinger for her guidance in helping to acclimate me to my position at Shreve Hall. Lori Beth has made my beginnings at Purdue wonderful. With her guidance at the top, all of the other employees here at Shreve have all made me feel very comfortable as well. She is a true leader. I look forward to working for her and getting to know all of the other wonderful people at Shreve that I have met to date. Thank you, Lori Beth! -- Debbie Crowe

Kevin Vedder, Sandy Skiles, Gayla Ruark and Shared Service Center staff: I would like to thank Kevin Vedder, Sandy Skiles, Gayla Ruark and their entire staff for the wonderful work that they do in the Shared Service Center. The volume of paperwork that they handle is massive, the hours are extremely long, there is always a deadline looming, and we continually present them with new situations. They handle it all with grace, and I am very grateful for all that they do! -- Lisa Rile

Thomas Coleman: I would like to recognize Thomas Coleman, manager of retail dining at the Purdue Memorial Union, for his leadership in creating awareness during Green Week. There have been a number of initiatives that have taken place over the last couple of years that have come to the forefront during this time of heightened attention. In advance of the Union Commons renovation, Tom played an instrumental role in assuring that the emphasis of all disposable ware was both environmentally friendly and made from recyclable materials. With 19 retail locations on campus, PMU Dining Services is about 90 percent eco-friendly in the area of disposable service ware. In addition, the Union has stepped up its recycling efforts and continues to make sustainability a primary service goal. Tom has led the way in research, participation on University committees and in the education of our staff and customers. I think it is important to recognize the role he is playing and will continue to play. -- Gary Goldberg

Paula Memmer: "Thumbs Up" to Paula, the hardest-working, friendliest, and most knowledgeable member of the Study Abroad Office staff. We'd be lost without her! -- Michael Bittinger

Hadley Thomas: A huge "Thumbs Up" and "Kudos" to Hadley Thomas, who graciously and professionally handled a very demanding week. She met several unexpected obstacles head-on with a smile and positive attitude. As a result, the College of Engineering was able to successfully host an out-of-state reception, put two advancement officers on the road, and celebrate Homecoming with our alumni. Hadley's positive can-do attitude is infectious, and we are sincerely grateful for the great work she does for us each and every day. -- Melissa Davies
