Libraries to hold events for International Open Access Week

The Purdue University Libraries will be sponsoring a series of events Oct. 19-23 for International Open Access Week.

All campus faculty, graduate students, and the Purdue community are invited to learn more about open access, specific Purdue initiatives, and ways to increase access to scholarly materials.

What is open access? The Budapest Open Access Initiative, in its FAQ, states, "By 'open access' ... we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited." (From the BOAI FAQ, www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/boaifaq.htm)

Events at Purdue include:

* "Scholarship and Open Access: Purdue Perspectives" panel discussion will be 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 206, Stewart Center.

Panelists are:

• Donna Ferullo, director of University Copyright Office and associate professor of library science (moderator).

• Peter Dunn, associate vice president for research and director of the University Research Administration and Compliance Office.

• Brian Dilkes, assistant professor in the department of horticulture and landscape architecture and a PLoS editor.

• Mark Newton, assistant professor of library science and digital collections librarian.

• Charles Watkinson, director of the Purdue University Press.

* "Authors' Rights: Reminders for Purdue Faculty and Researchers" will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday in Room 310, Stewart Center.

* Displays with general information about open access and Open Access Week will be shown in a Stewart Center main hallway display case. Libraries faculty and staff also will be available to answer questions about open access at a table in front of the Stewart Center mural in the west lobby from 1 a.m to 2 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
