Butler to lead ADVANCE coaching workshop for senior faculty

Susan Bulkeley Butler, an expert on coaching and a former member of the Purdue Board of Trustees, will lead a three-hour "train the trainer" coaching workshop for Purdue senior faculty members Monday as part of the ADVANCE-Purdue program.

ADVANCE-Purdue is a national program developed to increase the number and diversity of successful women faculty members in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). At Purdue, this includes departments in the School of Veterinary Medicine and the colleges of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. A $3.92 million National Science Foundation grant supports the program, as well as the Center for Faculty Success, housed in Discovery Park's Discovery Learning Research Center.

The goal of the coaching workshop is to train senior faculty members on how best to coach and mentor junior faculty members. About 30 faculty were selected for the workshop and were invited because they are considered as frequently sought-out by more junior faculty for advice and information.

During the workshop, Butler will define what it means to be a coach and provide techniques and best practices for being an effective coach. Butler's book, "Become the CEO of You, Inc: A Pioneering Executive Shares Her Secrets for Career Success," will be provided to participants.

The workshop is being presented by ADVANCE-Purdue and the Center for Faculty Success, in conjunction with the Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and the Office of the Provost.
