Workshops to boost disability employment knowledge

Four October informational sessions will be part of Purdue's recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The events are being offered by the Office of Institutional Equity.

The sessions are:

* Oct. 13 (Tu): "What Role Might Your Disability Play in Your Job Search and in the Work Environment?" 3-5 p.m. Room 318, STEW. For individuals with disabilities seeking employment, this presentation and discussion will share the "what" and "when" of disclosing disability-related information to a potential or new employer, as well as job seeker rights and responsibilities under the law.

* Oct. 20 (Tu): "Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Audio Conference." 2-3:30 p.m. Room 1057, Young Hall. This session is the first of the 2009-10 ADA Audio Conference Series presented by the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center. The program is designed to offer individuals advanced information on various ADA-related issues.

* Oct. 22 (Th): "Incorporating the Americans with Disabilities Act and Vocational Rehabilitation Toward Obtaining and Maintaining Employment." 9:30-11:30 a.m. Room 310, STEW. In this workshop, learn what employers are required to do under the ADA and how State Vocational Rehabilitation can assist employees with obtaining devices and services not covered under the ADA.

* Oct. 29 (Th): "Interacting with People with Disabilities." 3-5 p.m. Room 313, STEW. Not sure what to say or do when you meet someone with a disability?  This workshop offers faculty, staff, and students real-world guidance on creating an environment of respect and courtesy when interacting with people with a variety of disabilities.
