Find your way to the Dog Days of Summer

The Dogs of the Dog Days of Summer community art project has come back to campus, and a map showing the new indoor locations of the statues is available at www.vet.purdue.edu/

A link to the map also can be found on the School of Veterinary Medicine's homepage in the "Calendar" section, as part of the listing for the Dog Days of Summer.

The dogs were relocated inside Purdue buildings as a way of keeping the artwork on campus while increasing security for the statues.

Dog Days of Summer celebrates both the School of Veterinary Medicine's 50th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. A total of 13 life-size dog statues were placed on campus when the public display began in May. All but two have been returned to their new campus homes.

"St. Joan of Bark" and "Amelia Airhound" are being retouched by the artists and will go back on display as soon as they are finished. One entry, "Doggone," featuring an empty leash on grass, remains where it was originally placed along State Street in front of Stewart Center.

Purdue grounds personnel assisted the Dog Days project by relocating some of the original concrete bases away from major walkways. Signs soon will be placed on the original bases redirecting visitors to the indoor locations.

"We are thrilled to have these beautiful works of art back out in the public eye on the Purdue campus," said Kevin Doerr, director of alumni relations and public affairs for the veterinary school and member of the Dog Days organizing committee. "Dog Days is all about public art that celebrates the human-animal bond through creative artistic expression. Finding a way to keep these dogs on campus is very gratifying for all involved."
