Symposium to address nanotechnology, bioMEMS, biology

Purdue's 2008 Physiological Sensing Symposium, titled "Multiscale Integration of Nanotechnology, BioMEMS and Biology," is planned for Thursday (Nov. 20) in Discovery Park.

The event, featuring presentations and a poster session on related research, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 121 of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Raul Kopelman, the Richard Smalley Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry and Physics and director of the Biologic Nanotechnology Center at the University of Michigan, is the keynote speaker. His talk, "Nanoscale Sensors and Actuators for Biology and Medicine," is at 2 p.m. that day. Kopelman is researching the role that nanotechnology can play in diagnosing and treating cancer.

Nanotechnology and bioMEMS together are cited as potential new platforms for advanced new medical diagnostics and therapies. The emerging area also offers new approaches for developing technologies to study and understand cell biology and bionanosciences.

Event sponsors are Birck Nanotechnology Center, Bindley Bioscience Center and Purdue's Physiological Sensing Facility.
