Purdue economic development expert to participate in government telecast

Sam Cordes, Purdue Center for Regional Development co-director, will join international experts on economic development Wednesday (Sept. 10) for a live telecast sponsored by the Economic Development Administration.

The show, C2C: From Clusters to Competitiveness -- Propelling Regional Strategies for Success in the Worldwide Marketplace, will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 10. Viewers can call and e-mail questions during the broadcast. Registrations to receive the telecast can be filled out at: http://edabroadcast.haverstick.biz/.

The show will explore how states are boosting their economies by supporting regional industry clusters that grow higher-skilled, good paying jobs. Industry clusters are geographic concentrations of competing or interdependent firms that do business with each other, use similar technologies and draw from the same pool of workers. Examples include North Carolina's Research Triangle; the Hartford, Connecticut, insurance and finance markets; and Hollywood's film industry.

Cordes will share examples of regional clusters in Indiana. Other panelists include:

* Maine Governor John Baldacci
* Michael Porter, Bishop William Lawrence University professor at the Harvard Business School
* Deborah Wince-Smith, president of the Council on Competitiveness
* Karen Mills, venture capitalist, President of MMP Group, Brookings Institution Fellow and author of the recent Brookings white paper "Clusters and Competitiveness, A New Federal Role for Stimulating Regional Economies"
* Timothy Hodgdon, president of Hodgdon Yachts
* Orjan Solvell, professor at the Stockholm School of Economics and director for the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness.

Ben Erulkar, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, will serve as the broadcast host.
