Javelin thrower, Purdue-bound diver make Olympic team

Purdue javelin thrower Kara Patterson and incoming freshman diver David Boudia are members of the U.S. Olympic team.

Patterson set the Olympic Trials record in the javelin with a winning throw of 58.44 meters, guaranteeing her spot in the Olympics. She is the first woman to represent Purdue track and field at the Olympics.

Boudia, who will be a member of Purdue's diving team this fall, earned his spot on the Olympic team after winning the 10-meter dive at the Olympic Trials.

In addition, former Boilermaker shortstop Mike Duursma will take part in the Olympics as a member of the baseball team for the Netherlands.

The Olympic Games begin Aug. 8 in Beijing.
