Extension helps with flood recovery

Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service has made it a priority to be part of the solution as Indiana residents recover from a recent tornado on the eastside of Indianapolis and record flooding in southern Indiana.

Purdue Extension has delivered more than 8,000 copies of "First Steps to Flood Recovery" to people forced out of their homes and businesses. The publication gives tips on safeguarding their families, safely re-entering homes, salvaging belongings, keeping drinking water safe and more.

Purdue Extension also has responded by:

-- Working with the Indiana Department of Agriculture and the Indiana Farm Service Agency to distribute information to farmers about helping with farm disaster assessments. Extension educators will follow up by providing information on farm recovery.

-- Helping Indiana Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and its member organizations engage in response and recovery efforts.

Purdue employees with friends and family affected by the floods can find "First Steps to Flood Recovery," and more helpful information at the Purdue Extension Disaster Education Network Web site, http://www.ces.purdue.edu/eden.  More information also is available by clicking on "Floods and Storms."

The publication also is available at county offices of Purdue Extension or by calling the toll-free Purdue Extension hotline at 1-888-EXT-INFO (398-4636).
Information about tornadoes also can be found on the site.
