Purdue, INShape Indiana team up for walking program

Purdue is teaming up with INShape Indiana to provide University employees with more ways to improve their health -- and earn a purple apple in the process.

In one of the first partnership efforts, Purdue employees, spouses and same-sex partners will have the chance to participate in a 12-week walking program starting April 14 called "Ready, Set, Walk!" Participants also may be eligible to receive a free pedometer by signing up today or Friday.

Participants will receive e-mails with walking tips, advice for healthier eating, and a basic exercise schedule. Individual participants will be able to qualify for a prize drawing by reporting on their total miles walked.

The walking program will qualify for a purple apple for Healthy Purdue 2008. Participants should contact their wellness program leader to complete the appropriate paperwork for the community alternative option.

Those interested in participating in "Ready, Set, Walk!" will need to register first with the INShape Indiana Web site at www.inshape.in.gov.

The registration form will ask for the name of your employer.
The following codes have been determined for Purdue:

-- West Lafayette campus: Purdue WL.

-- Purdue North Central: Purdue NC.

-- Purdue Calumet: Purdue Cal.

-- Purdue Fort Wayne: Purdue FW.

Employees' spouses and same-sex partners will put in the appropriate code for the employed spouse or partner's campus.

Once registered, participants will start receiving information about the walking program.

People already registered with INShape Indiana should update their profile to include one of the Purdue codes listed above. The e-mail sent to INShape Indiana participants includes an "Update Profile" link at the bottom.

To be eligible to receive a free pedometer, new INShape Indiana participants must register on the Web site today or Friday and include their Purdue code. A coupon that can printed and redeemed for one pedometer will appear on the confirmation page of the enrollment process.

Anyone already registered with INShape Indiana will receive an e-mail that explains the walking program and contains a printable coupon redeemable for one pedometer.

Coupons can be redeemed for the pedometers starting April 7 at an employee's respective wellness office.
