Purdue police announce laptop computer registration program

Purdue University Police Department is launching an on-line laptop computer registration program on Jan. 28, available through the police department's Web site.

The laptop registration program is similar to the successful bicycle registration program.

The program is voluntary, but highly recommended to all students, staff and faculty who own laptop computers.

The owner will be asked to provide the serial number, make and model of the laptop through an on-line registration form. Once this form is submitted, the owner will receive a confirmation advising that their registration has been received and is on file.

Information provided will be maintained on file at the PUPD and available to assist investigators in the event that the registered laptop computer is stolen. It also will allow PUPD to enter the laptop into a stolen property database that is available to law enforcement officers throughout the United States. The information contained on the registration form will also assist in the return of the registered laptop if it has been reported stolen and recovered, or lost and found.

The program is designed for laptops but if anyone is interested in registering their desktop computers, the police will accommodate these requests.

PUPD personnel will be available to provide assistance in completing this form.

Call 49-48221 or go to the department office at 205 S. Martin Jischke Dr., West Lafayette, Indiana.
