Literary Awards offers new prizes, earlier deadline

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 1999 Literary Awards Competition will include a new contest category and an earlier deadline for entries.

A new award is the Eric L. Clitheroe Prize for the best undergraduate essay in any field of philosophy. The winner will receive $200, the runner-up $100.

Prizes will be awarded in more than 50 other categories to graduate and undergraduate students, who are encouraged to submit their best work from the fall semester. All Literary Awards entries must be received by the Department of English by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 10. Entries should be hand-delivered or mailed to: Literary Awards Contest, Department of English, Room 324 Heavilon Hall, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907.

Prizes will be awarded at the Literary Awards banquet, Thursday, April 15. The quest speaker will be the renowned Irish poet Eavan Boland, whose works include "In a Time of Violence" and "Outside History."
