WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- H. Oner Yurtseven, an internationally known expert in electrical engineering, has been selected to become the new dean of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
His name will be forwarded to the Trustees of Indiana University for approval at their Aug. 16 meeting.
Yurtseven currently is provost of the school's partnership with Malaysia's Tenaga Nasional Engineering and Technology Institute, which prepares engineers for that country's rapidly expanding economy.
Doris Merritt, who served as the school's acting dean since last September, returns to her position as professor of pediatrics and associate dean at the IU School of Medicine.
Yurtseven began his career at the School of Engineering and Technology in 1977 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and became a full professor in 1983. He also served as assistant and then associate dean for academic affairs. From 1986-89, he was chairman of the division of engineering. Before accepting the provost position in Malaysia in 1994, Yurtseven was associate dean for academic programs.
Prior to joining IUPUI, Yurtseven taught electrical engineering at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., which he attended on a Fulbright Scholarship and from which he received his doctorate in 1974. Yurtseven also has done research for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the U.S. Agency for International Development, the United Nations and Union Carbide Corp.
He has written numerous articles on signal processing, control systems, robotics and engineering education. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Robotics and Automation Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
