Purdue faculty and staff receive honors
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Thirteen Purdue University faculty and staff received honors
recently.
- Michael A. Brzezinski, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars
and assistant professor of educational foundations, has been appointed to the editorial
advisory board of National Association of Foreign Student Affairs: Association of International Educators. He will work on the production of an international student
handbook, "NAFSA's Passport to University Study in the USA: Things International
Students Should Know." Brzezinski also is the China coordinator for NAFSA, which
is the largest international education association in the world.
- Lowell S. Hardin, assistant director of International Programs in Agriculture and
professor emeritus of agricultural economics, has been inducted as a founding member
of the Purdue chapter of Phi Beta Delta, an international honor society that recognizes students and scholars for academic excellence and international achievement. The
induction ceremony for 27 students also included a special honorary membership for
Hardin for his contributions to the alleviation of hunger worldwide and his promotion
of international teaching, research and service. Hardin retired as a professor in 1984,
but he continues as assistant director in International Programs in Agriculture.
- Maribeth Cassidy Schmitt, associate professor of literacy and language and director
of the Indiana Reading Recovery program based in the School of Education, has been
elected to the board of directors of the Reading Recovery Council of North America.
She also will chair the North American Trainers meeting in North Carolina in the fall.
Reading Recovery is a literacy-intervention program for the 20 percent of pupils
in a first-grade class who are at risk of failing to become literate.
- Student Services honored outstanding faculty and staff members at the annual Student
Services Staff Recognition Program. Those receiving merit-based awards include: Betty
Nelson, dean emerita of students, the Distinguished Service Award; Gloria Brown,
secretary in counseling and psychological services, the Clerical/Service Career Award;
Sandy Monroe, associate dean of students and head of the counseling area for the
past six years, the Administrative/Professional Career Award; Marilyn Marshall, clerk
in the registrar's office, the Clerical/Service Leadership Award; Stephen Akers, executive
associate dean of students, the Administrative/Professional Leadership Award; Kathy
Greenwood, secretary in the Department of Aerospace Studies, the Clerical/Service
Merit Award; Lt. Ryan Brookhart, assistant professor of naval science, the Faculty/Administrative/Professional
New Professional Award; and Susan Prieto, coordinator of clinical services, counseling
and psychological services, Best Paper Award.
- The College and University Computer Users Association named a paper by two Management
Information staff members as one of the top six papers during the association's 41st
annual conference. Diana C. Allen, architect modeler, and Harry D. Smith, business
analyst, are co-authors of "Captive Clients: The High Road to Customer Involvement."
The paper describes a model that Management Information uses to involve Purdue clients
directly on computer projects to provide a business office perspective. For example, Smith is on loan as a full-time member of the Management Information team that for
the last two years has been building a data base for campus business administrators.
Previously, he was business administrator in the School of Agriculture.
