Purdue grad to head union's food service operation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Steven J. Chambers has accepted an appointment as food service director for the Purdue Memorial Union.

Chambers, who has worked as general manager in Marriott's Corporate Service Division for the last 10 years, will start working at Purdue on Monday (6/10). He is a 1982 Purdue graduate with a bachelor's degree from the restaurant, hotel, institutional, and tourism management program.

The union food service director is in charge of the Union Market, Sweet Shop and Stripe Shop in the Purdue Memorial Union and other food operations on campus such as the Sunshine Cafe outside Stewart Center and Vet Vittles in Lynn Hall.

Chambers' duties for Marriott were overseeing all food service operations for Bayer Corp. in Elkhart. The operation included managing four cafeterias, 75 vending machines, 115 office coffee service stations and an upscale catering program. While working for Marriott, Chambers also served as senior food service director at Memorial Hospital of South Bend and director of food and nutritional services at Elkhart General Hospital.

Chambers succeeds Melvin Hughes, who has been interim food service director for three and a half years. Hughes will work in the office of the vice president for housing and food service.
