Continued Expansion and Renovation

West Lafayette, Ind. -- Bids totaling more than $3.4 million for construction and renovation projects on Purdue University's West Lafayette and Fort Wayne campuses and the Agronomy Farm were approved Friday (3/17) by the university's Board of Trustees.

Among the projects is continued expansion and renovation work at Wade Utility Plant at the south end of the West Lafayette campus, although bids for one aspect of the expansion were rejected.

Long Electric Co. Inc., Lafayette, was awarded a $390,000 contract for installation of a demineralizer unit at the utility plant.

The unit will enable the university to be in full compliance with state and federal guidelines regarding pH levels in water discharged from the plant, said Kenneth P. Burns, vice president for physical facilities.

Also as part of the utility plant's expansion plans, a project to install coal, ash and limestone silos will proceed with Friday's board of trustees' approval. The $954,000 project was awarded to Marietta Structures Corp., Marietta, Ohio.

Bids for a coal bunker renovation project at the plant was rejected. Frederick R. Ford, executive vice president and treasurer, said the bids exceeded the project engineer's estimate by a substantial margin. He said the project will be redesigned somewhat and rebid at a later date.

A pesticide storage facility will be constructed at the Purdue Agronomy Farm, northwest of the West Lafayette campus. The total project budget is $600,000, with J.R. Kelly Company Inc., West Lafayette, receiving the contract.
