January 31, 2003 Purdue tops national survey of hospitality management programs for second time in yearWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's hospitality and tourism management undergraduate program has been ranked No. 1 nationally by a survey published in the December issue of the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education.
This is the second time in 2002 Purdue's hospitality and tourism management program has been ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education. The previous survey used a different methodology and sample. The more recent study selected 21 large undergraduate hospitality management programs and surveyed industry recruiters on six attributes: attitude of the students, curriculum, work experience, quality of facilities, quality of faculty, career services and overall program quality. The industry recruiters rated attitude of the students, curriculum and work experience as the most important attributes, and the surveyors weighted them accordingly. Purdue's hospitality and tourism management program ranked No. 1 in attitude of its students and No. 2 in curriculum, which led to the highest combined rating in the survey. "We are gratified by this No. 1 ranking, because recruiters are one of our most important constituencies," said Raphael R. Kavanaugh, professor and head of Purdue's hospitality and tourism management department. "Practically, it means recruiters will continue to recruit our students, which is a very big factor in the minds of our prospective students and their parents. "We are also happy that the survey recognized how well our program aligned with the characteristics the recruiters perceived as important." Purdue received 46.15 points in the survey. No. 2 University of Nevada Las Vegas received 45.95 points; No. 3 Cornell received 45.26 points; No. 4 Michigan State received 44.32 points; and No. 5 Penn State received 43.92 points. Purdue's hospitality and tourism management program has 540 undergraduate students. The department also offers master's degrees and a doctorate. Writer: J.M.
