May 14, 2001 Purdue officers participate in National Police Memorial Week WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Police Department will join four other Tippecanoe County law enforcement agencies for National Police Week activities this week. The special week honoring officers killed in the line of duty developed around the National Peace Officers Memorial Service first held by President John F. Kennedy on May 15, 1963. The 2001 annual service in Washington, D.C., will honor the 178 U.S. police officers killed in the line of duty last year. The local memorial service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday (5/17) at Lafayette City Hall, 20 N. 6th St. Lafayette Mayor Dave Heath, West Lafayette Mayor Sonya Margerum and a representative of the Tippecanoe County Board of Commissioners will issue proclamations during the ceremony. The week concludes with a special informational display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday (5/19) at the Tippecanoe Mall, 2415 Sagamore Parkway South, Lafayette. Among the vehicles on display will be the Purdue Police Department TransAm, the Indiana State Police Camaro and the Lafayette Police Department's DARE car.
